ProjectWise Geospatial Implementation

Note: Implementing ProjectWise Geospatial assumes that you have already performed the basic ProjectWise setup, which includes creating a ProjectWise datasource.

After you have installed the ProjectWise Geospatial applications on top of the respective ProjectWise applications, the following configuration must be done, at a minimum, in order to be able to start using ProjectWise Geospatial:

Create the geospatial tables in the database
Define at least one coordinate system
Create at least one background map

See below for details.

Creating the Geospatial Tables in the Database

When the ProjectWise Geospatial Management extension to ProjectWise Design Integration Server and ProjectWise Geospatial Administrator are both installed and you create a new datasource, geospatial tables are automatically created in the database.

For an existing datasource, you will be prompted to create geospatial tables in the database the first time you log in to the datasource in ProjectWise Geospatial Administrator:

You can either select Yes to create the database tables now, or No if want to create them later or not at all. If you choose not to create them when prompted, you can still log in and use the datasource.

Note: Once you create the geospatial tables in the database, you cannot undo the action. You can however, disable the ProjectWise Geospatial functionality in that datasource if you later decide that you do not need it.

If you select No when prompted to create the database tables, you can create them later by right-clicking the datasource and selecting All Tasks > Geospatial Capabilities Management:

Next, the Geospatial Capabilities Management dialog opens and displays the current state of the datasource, that is, whether or not ProjectWise Geospatial is enabled in this datasource and whether or not the database has the required geospatial database tables. Assuming that ProjectWise Geospatial is not enabled yet, select Create Database Geospatial Tables and click OK.

Defining at Least One Coordinate System

At least one coordinate system must be defined.

To define a coordinate system:

Right-click the Coordinate Systems datasource node and select Add.
The Add Coordinate Systems dialog opens. All the available coordinate systems from the reprojection engine are presented in the Available Coordinate Systems list. Note that the coordinate systems that are already added are not present in the list.
Select one of the coordinate systems from the list and click Add.
The selected coordinate system is added to the Coordinate Systems list.
Right-click the newly added coordinate system and select Set as reference.
The coordinate system is now marked as the reference and the icon is different from the other coordinate system icons.

Note: The reference coordinate system is used to compare objects that are in different coordinate systems. In that case, both objects will be re-projected into the reference coordinate system before being compared. The reference coordinate system must be chosen carefully so that all other coordinate systems have a valid transformation path to it.

Creating at Least One Background Map

Background maps are the backdrops that are displayed in the Spatial/Geospatial tab in ProjectWise Explorer. They are used as maps over which the document and folder spatial locations are drawn.

You can create two types of background maps:

Spatial background maps are the basic maps that have been created with ProjectWise Spatial (the basic spatial functionality provided by ProjectWise Design Integration Server).
Geospatial background maps are more advanced maps that can feed from Oracle Spatial, DGN, SHP, WMS, etc. richer data much faster. These maps are created with Bentley Geo Web Publisher. In order to take advantage of geospatial background maps, Bentley Geo Web Publisher must be installed and configured. Then from the Background Map Engine Settings Dialog , the Geo Web Publisher Server address has to be specified.
